Woodpecker Wanna-be

Woodpecker Wanna-be

Woodpecker Wanna-Be

Sitting on my porch, soaking up the sun, on St Patrick’s Day – ahhhhh.  Fully clothes, mind you, with my jeans & shirt sleeves hiked up a bit – but oh it felt so nice to soak up some light & warmth.  I know for those of you further south than me you’ve been doing this for quite some time now (lucky) and for those of you up north, your time will come (grin).

Anyway, I’m sitting there relaxing with my eyes closed and I hear this tap… tap-tap… tap-tap…. tap.  Curiosity got the better of me and I look around to see what it could be.  I shortly discover this maybe 5inch grayish bird with a 2inch beak, pecking at a tree in the yard.  I have no clue what kind of bird it could be, but I thought “that’s no woodpecker”, although I suppose it could’ve been.

You see, we have a redheaded woodpecker in the neighborhood.  He is a beauty, and pretty big too.  This was definitely not him.  As if on cue, I heard a loud squawk and Rat-at-at-at-at-at-a-tat, all that pecking coming in rapid succession.  Now THAT was a woodpecker!  He wasn’t in my yard, the sound was coming from a yard across the street.  The bird in my yard continued his tap…tap-tapping.  I can bet the neighbors couldn’t hear him in their yard.  So, I dubbed this bird a woodpecker wanna be.

As I continued to relax in the warmth of the sun, I periodically watched the bird.  He slowly tapped at the tree.  His head was thrust back and forward with, what looked like, great effort.  I wondered if that bird would be visiting a chiropractor later.  I mean, he was workin’ it!  Since I now thought of him as a woodpecker wanna be, I started thinking of how hard he was trying to be something he wasn’t.  Then I put that in the context of people…

How often do we see someone else and think how wonderful they are, how great they have it?  Remember the commercials “Be like Mike”?  There is only one Michael Jordan and no matter how hard we try, we will never be the basketball player he was.  Just as there is only one (whoever you admire), there is only one YOU.  You are unique.  Have you ever wondered if maybe someone was aspiring to be you??    You only have one life to live, so live it to the fullest, not letting yourself down and not striving to be someone else, but striving to be the best you that you can be.

Have an awesome weekend, my friends!
