What’s your major?
It’s that time of year again. Colleges have started. Some high schools have started, or will be starting soon. A friend of mine (Charles Gupton, http://charlesgupton.com ) posted the following article on his Facebook page and I thought it was important information and relevant to many of the people I know, so I am posting it in this blog.
It is about the ten worst college majors right now. Timely, don’t you think?
v How many people do you know who have changed their major at least once?
v How many people do you know who have no idea what they want to major in?
v How many people do you know who cannot find a job in the field of their major?
My guess is you know many people in all three of these categories.
Some people know what they want to be before they even enter high school. That is certainly a perk, as you can tailor your electives toward that end. Others know what they want to be when they enter college. That is definitely a plus. Many people enter college with no clue what they want to do, they just know they have a better chance at a good job with a college degree.
There are certainly tests that can help you match your personality to a career option. One of my favorite questions to ask people when they are trying to figure out what career field to go into is, “What do you love doing so much that you would do it for free?”
I am a big advocate of loving your job. I know, I’m weird – grin. I certainly understand that ya gotta do what ya gotta do to pay the bills. Imagine if you loved what you had to do! Wouldn’t that be sweet?
If you take a look at this link and discover that your major is one of the ten worst career fields, you may want to have a discussion with your advisor. Or not, things change, right? Keep that positive outlook!
