Sing it out
I came across the stat that said Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen, was the number one sing along song in the country last year. Some recent posts I’ve made about different ways to release stress included listen to music and I mentioned singing along with it. Besides helping reduce stress, singing can:
- Improve your mood
- Improve your sleep
- Relieve pain
- Increase productivity
John Haltiwanger reports, “Singing is great for your brain, and can literally make you feel high. It releases endorphins, hormones that produce pleasure, simultaneous to oxytocin, hormones that diminish stress and anxiety. Research has also shown singing produces lower levels of cortisol, improving our immune systems. In other words, singing could potentially help keep you from getting sick.”
I’ve been known to sing in the shower with no music playing. I also sing in the car, when I’m alone. Not only to relive stress, but because I enjoy it. People driving by me, or waiting at a light next to me, probably think I’m crazy. I love to sing along with the radio in my car.
Those folks who love Karaoke are on to something. Studies say that singing with a group of friends promotes bonding (wonder if the quality of your voice has any effect on this one) and makes people happy.
