Rumors & Gossip
Rumors & Gossip
Why is it that people feel the need to talk poorly about other people? I just don’t understand why you would say bad things about someone – what is the purpose of this?
A rumor is something you spread about someone that is not true. Is this done to put them down and make people not like them or is it to build yourself up, so that you look better in the eyes of others and they will want to hang out with you? Rumors can ruin really mess with someone’s life. It can cost them a relationship, or maybe a job. Starting rumors is mean and spiteful. Spreading rumors is uncalled for. Often the rumor you are spreading may be about someone who considered you a friend. Nice friend you are.
Gossip is something that may be true. It probably is something stupid that someone did or said and somebody else found out about it. The question becomes, why did the somebody decide to tell other people about the stupid thing that someone, sometimes a friend, did? Even if what you are saying is true – why do you feel the need to spread it around? Why are you trying to embarrass this person? For those of you passing the information on… SHAME ON YOU! Especially if this person is/was a friend of yours.
Is it fun to make other people look bad? Are you just a mean and spiteful fool? How would YOU feel if someone was telling all your friends about some of the mistakes you have made? Hmm, revenge is a whole ‘nother topic, but it is something to consider. What’s that phrase? What goes around comes around?
Do you remember that old game “telephone”? One person whispers something to the person next to them and it goes down the line, or around the circle, and the last person says what they heard out loud. Most often the person who speaks what was originally whispered has the entire sentence wrong. How about listening to someone tell a story or a joke? Typically, each teller thinks they can make the story a little more interesting and adds/deletes/changes the original just a tweak, but as the story gets more & more tweaked, it is nowhere near the true story. Have those of you who are so eager to share some dirt on your friends ever considered the dirt you are sharing might be so far-fetched from the original footprint that you now need a shovel to spread it around?! Seriously, people!
Rumors and gossip have started wars, broken up marriages, torn apart families, ruined friendships, gotten people run out of town, sent people to jail, and even had people killed (The Salem Witch Hunts come to mind). Does anyone remember The Golden Rule? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. GROW UP PEOPLE!
As for me & my house, if we don’t have something nice to say we don’t say anything at all, and if we hear unkind rumors or gossip we do not pass it on.
Responsible adults do not spread rumors and gossip. If you happen to be a person who just lives to wreak havoc in other people’s lives – PPHHTTT (that’s a raspberry) on you!
