Peace on Earth

Aside from being the anthem for any Miss (fill in the blank) contestant, it is most often at Christmas time when we really think about peace on earth.  Of course, any military family thinks about this concept constantly, as our soldiers go off to war.

My absolute favorite Christmas show is “A Charlie Brown Christmas”.  I LOVE it when Charlie Brown asks, “Can anyone tell me what Christmas is all about?”  and Linus steps to the stage, in the spotlight and recites Bible verses from Luke 2:1-14, which ends “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

I sometimes wonder if peace on earth is truly attainable.  All the way back in Genesis, the first murder was committed when Cain killed his brother Able.  All the way through the Bible, and through world history, there have always been people at war with other people, countries vs. countries, brother vs. brother.  I believe it is only going to get worse.  The Bible says “You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.”  Al-Qaida claims it will not stop until all infidels are removed from the face of the earth.  Korea is working on nuclear weapons.  Philosopher, George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Having pointed out the obvious, depressing, stuff, I must say – HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL.

We must have hope, we must continue to strive for and believe that peace on earth is attainable!

The John Lennon song, Imagine, comes to mind.  “Imagine all the people, living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one.”

How about My Grown Up Christmas List? “Not for myself, But for a world in need…No more lives torn apart, That wars will never start, And time will heal our hearts, Every man will have a friend, That right will always win, And love will never end, This is my grown up Christmas List”

If I took the time to really think about it, I’m sure I could come up with many more examples of the human desire for peace on earth.  How about you?  What do you think about when you think of Peace on Earth?

Oh, we MUST believe!

Please remember to pray for our military.  There are many families apart this holiday season, as our soldiers are at war, overseas.  I pray God will protect our soldiers, comfort their families, and bring all our military forces home safe!

Let there be peace on earth

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
With God as our father
Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With every step I take
Let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment
And live each moment
With peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.

Merry Christmas!
