July 4th is our favorite time of year!

The week of July 4th is such a historic, patriotic, all American time of year. Being history buffs and military family members, we are all about this holiday. We always watch The Patriot, Gettysburg, and 1776 – all wonderful, historically based films that I recommend you see, if you haven’t.

We love all the patriotic holidays…
• Memorial Day, a day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country
• Independence Day, a day to celebrate our country’s freedom
• Veterans Day, a day to thank and honor those who served in our nation’s armed forces

We have celebrated the holiday in many different ways (other than watching movies).

Small town picnics and parades are a wonderful way to enjoy the holiday. People bring some terrific tasting food to community celebrations and it just has that personal hometown feeling to it.

Travel to Monticello or Poplar Forest, (the historic homes of Thomas Jefferson) to attend the reading of the Declaration of Independence, by an actor portraying Thomas Jefferson. Very Cool!

If you can handle a crowd, I think everyone should experience the holiday in Washington, DC. at least once. The parade is great (but the bottled water is expensive!). You HAVE to visit the monuments, although you could do that on another visit. The fireworks in Washington, DC. are the BEST! Nothing can beat the exhilaration of seeing fourth of July fireworks over our nation’s capital – breathtaking!

These days, with our children grown and out of the house, we are more apt to invite friends and/or family over for a simple cookout and pool day – followed by watching A Capital Fourth on TV. Yes, it’s a little corny, but we like the fireworks at the end, brings back good memories for us.

However you choose to celebrate Independence Day, remember the reason for the celebration…
…We hold these truths to be [sacred and undeniable] self-evident, that all men are created equal and independent… among which are the preservation of life, and liberty and the pursuit of happiness… and finally we do assert and declare these colonies to be free and independent states…
