Dress yourself with joy

Dress yourself with joy

As Christians, I would think we have all heard the comment, “Put on the full armor of God.” This comes from Ephesians 6:10-17.  There are many wonderful Bible studies on these specific verses.

However, I recently came across (Psalm 65:12 New Life Version), “The fields of the desert are filled with water. And the hills dress themselves with joy.”  Which caused me to pause and consider, how we can be like the hills. How can we “dress ourselves with joy?”

The word “joy” is written 444 times, in the New Life Version. Admittedly, some of them mention a loss of joy. That does happen, but if we dress ourselves with joy, it will certainly lessen our joy depletion.

When we get dressed each morning, we cover ourselves with our clothing. If we dress ourselves with joy, we cover ourselves with it. As we choose what clothes to put on each day, we can choose to cover ourselves with joy.

James 1:2 (WEB) tells us, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations,” Yes, even in our trials we can chose joy!  We know, trust, and believe that God is in control.  Everything is working for good (Romans 8:28). God is for us (Romans 8:31). Jesus is with us always (Matthew 28:20).  Each of these verses bring us Good News!

If we choose joy every morning, remembering that we carry the Holy Spirit with us, we decide to look at things differently than many people. We act in a more positive manner than most. We have a lighter load to carry, because we have allowed Jesus to share our burdens.

Choosing joy doesn’t mean everything is perfect. It merely means that we are not going to be weighed down by life, that we enjoy each and every day, no matter the circumstances, for we know that earth is only temporary and that we have an eternity in the presence of Almighty God to look forward to.

Oh yes, I think the Passion Translation says it best, Philippians 4:4 “Be cheerful with joyous celebration in every season of life. Let joy overflow, for you are united with the Anointed One!”
