Why is bullying tolerated?
Today I witnessed a young man being a total jerk, numerous times, to his peers. Nobody said anything to him or stopped it. This led me to wonder, why is bullying still being tolerated?
I saw the young man grab another guy around the waist, take a soda right out of his hand and say, “I’m gonna shove this can up your f*****g a**.” My natural instinct kicked in and I said, “Excuse me?” To which both guys looked over at me as if they’d been caught misbehaving. Then I said, “Not in the (my location) you aren’t.” The bully let go and went about his business.
Later I saw him grab a guy, not sure if it was the same guy or not, around the waste from behind and grab a bag of chips away from him. Nobody said or did anything. Still later I saw him approach a young lady and make an insulting remark about her glasses. I have to say, I was impressed with the woman. She told him, “Haven’t you got anything better than that? I’ve heard that one already.” I chuckled. Good for her.
Eventually, the bully decided to leave, taking three other guys with him. My first thought was, why do these guys want to hang out with him? I’m not sure if any of them were victims of his shenanigans or not. If so, I really wonder why they would hang out with him and tolerate his aggressive behavior. If they weren’t, it could be they felt protected from being a target if they were his friend. Maybe.
In discussing this with a group of friends, they pointed out that the guy’s behavior may be just playing around. That’s why everyone tolerated it. Hmmm, I suppose that could be true, but that young man needs to find a better way to “play” with his buddies. No one seemed to be enjoying his attacks.
